Travel drives are multi-stage planetary gearboxes, which are predominantly driven hydraulically with fixed-displacement or variable displacement motors. Commonly with larger travel drives, several hydraulic motors are used, their power is accumulated via a spur gearbox as an entry stage. The drive torque is usually transmitted by the internal gear wheel to a sprocket, which can be supplied as an option. There are two basic types - one consists of very compact coaxial units, ideal for excavators, the other travel drive type is equipped with an input spur gear stage that allows greater ground clearance for the machine, a typical requirement for crawler tractors or crawler loaders.
Travel drives have proved their worth in the toughest of environments thanks to their robust design and optimised sealing systems, e.g. double glide ring seals, and are especially noteworthy for their high quality and ease of maintenance.
